Makoto, Alex, and Ezra to direct spring's HMS Pinafore
The University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society is delighted to announce the all-star creative team who will be steering our spring production (April 9 – 14) of HMS Pinafore: Makoto Takata and Alex Duncan will be co-Artistic Directors, with Ezra Donner as Music Director.
Makoto (current student, class of 2020) and Alex (alumna, class of 2018) are both from Eastern Michigan University and bring a wealth of talent to directing UMGASS. You can see Makoto starring in our current production of The Yeomen of the Guard as Jack Point. Makoto should be a familiar face to many as HMS Pinafore marks their 7th UMGASS production. We’re particularly excited to see how their scholarly interest in Victorian Studies brings added depth to Pinafore. This is Alex’s second UMGASS production. She has previously directed four times, twice with EMU and twice with Ann Arbor Civic Theater. Her most recent directing credit is Ann Arbor Civic Theater’s Proof.
Ezra is the current Music Director for Yeomen of the Guard. Ezra previously served as UMGASS Music Director from 2015 to 2017. He holds a Doctor of Music Degree in Composition from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Music with High Honors from the University of Michigan. Ezra’s previously conducting of HMS Pinafore resulted in “a wonderfully authentic production, with very strong leads and a talented chorus, put on at a rollicking pace with a pit orchestra spilling over into the aisles of the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater (AADL Pulp - Eli Neiburger).”
